The Material Question

What Makes CLEARsplint Different From a Hard Acrylic Splint

A patient comes back two weeks into a new hard guard with a sore, inflamed vestibule, and nobody is certain whether the problem is the fit or the plastic. That is the case CLEARsplint exists for.

It is a processed CLEARsplint dental appliance in a clear thermoactive resin, supplied by the manufacturer as a formulation without free methyl methacrylate monomer. That is the reason to specify this clear dental splint when a sensitivity history is on the chart.

  • Monomer-free: Supplied by the manufacturer as a formulation without free methyl methacrylate monomer.

  • Thermoactive: Firmer in your hand than in the mouth — warmed before insertion it passes undercuts that stop a rigid splint, then firms back up once seated.

The First One You Seat

How It Behaves at Delivery

The first CLEARsplint you seat usually surprises people, so it is worth saying before the appliance is in your hand. Delivered cold, it behaves like a rigid appliance; warmed, it walks over the undercut.

  • Warm it first: Run it under warm water and it relaxes enough to pass the height of contour, then firms back up at mouth temperature.

  • Adjusts like acrylic: It responds to a bur and a polishing wheel like any processed appliance — and a splint you have cut into is not finished until it is polished again, at the chair.

  • If it still binds: Mark where a warmed splint catches and send it back rather than relieving the intaglio.

Before you specify

A formulation is not a guarantee. Monomer-free describes what is not in the resin, not how a particular immune system will behave. Work the patient up, make the material call, and put it on the RX.

  • Cases you expect to keep modifying rather than replace

Consider an alternative when

  • The allergy is documented but not worked up. That is a clinical conversation, not a lab order
  • The scheme is the treatment. Deprogramming, TMD and splint therapy want a rigid appliance
  • The prescription calls for a soft surface against the teeth. That is a dual laminate
  • You want an anterior-only device rather than full-arch coverage
  • The patient needs retention after orthodontics, not occlusal protection

Before You Take Records

Sending a CLEARsplint Case

This case is won or lost on the RX, not in the box. Name the material you want the splint built in, name the jaw position your bite record was taken in, and everything after that is ordinary lab work.

On the RX and in the box:

  • Both arches. Files from iTero, 3Shape and Medit all come through fine, as do impressions
  • A bite registration at the vertical you want the splint built to
  • Which arch the appliance goes on
  • The occlusal scheme: flat plane, canine guidance, or anterior contacts only
  • Any history of reaction to an appliance, and the material you want used
  • Any area you would rather have relieved than engaged

When one of these cases goes wrong, it is rarely the resin. The usual cause is a registration taken in maximum intercuspation when the prescription wanted an opened vertical: a splint built correctly to the wrong record. CLEARsplint: What Practices Ask Us

We cannot make that call, and neither can the material. The resin is supplied monomer-free, which is why dentists send us these cases after a patient has reacted to a conventional acrylic appliance. But a formulation is not an immune system. Work the allergy up clinically, put your decision on the RX, and we will build to it. We do not substitute a material quietly.

Check how it was seated before you condemn it. Delivered cold, a CLEARsplint behaves like a rigid appliance and stops at the height of contour on exactly the arch it was prescribed for. Warmed, it walks over that undercut. Reading the resistance as a fit error is the one avoidable mistake here.

Yes, and on this appliance that matters for a reason that has nothing to do with breakage. Splint therapy moves. The scheme you set in month one is not always the scheme you want in month four, and a processed splint can be added to and re-adjusted in the same resin, so the patient keeps the appliance they already tolerate instead of learning a new one.

A patient who has already cracked or chewed through appliances is buying durability and serviceability, and that is a hard processed Talon nightguard. A patient in deprogramming or TMD work, where a prescribed scheme has to survive between appointments, wants a rigid KeySplint. CLEARsplint earns its place when the material is the deciding factor.
